Toddlers and Sleep

As with anything else toddler-related, there’s no such thing as a “one size fits all” sleep pattern. Some toddlers need more sleep in a 24-hour period than the 10 to 13 hours recommended by the Canadian Paediatric Society (or the 11 to 14 hours recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine), while others seem to be able to survive on less. And just as the amount of food your toddler consumes can vary from day to day, the amount and quality of sleep that he clocks can vary from night to night and from naptime to naptime. All that said, most toddlers fall into a sleep pattern that looks at least vaguely similar to this: they head to bed between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., they start their day between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., and they nap once or twice during the day.

Your challenge, as the parent of a toddler, is to figure out how much sleep your toddler needs right now; and what you can do to help him clock that amount of shut-eye in a way that supports both his long-term development and the health of your relationship.
